Algalita's educations goals are met through our K-12 school programs (including curriculums and/or DVDs set to California's science standards), through public outreach, and through our unique educational literature. We make presentations at the local, state, federal and international levels on the topics of marine debris and ocean health. We have also created a series of videos intended to inform the public about ocean pollution.

Free Marine Science Program and Resources for Schools

The Algalita Marine Research Foundation is currently offering free teacher resource guides and science enrichment assemblies on the LA River and plastic marine pollution to local public school teachers. Support for these resources is made possible by a grant from the Boeing Foundation and a partnership with Friends of the LA River (FOLAR).

The first 24 teachers to respond will receive a free, marine science assembly based on Algalita’s 10 years of research on plastic pollution and marine ecosystems in the North Pacific Gyre. The program will cover our recent expeditions across the Pacific Ocean, including the voyage of JUNKraft, a boat made from 15,000 plastic bottles that sailed from Long Beach to Hawaii last summer. Students will learn about the impacts of plastic pollution on marine wildlife and human health, and what they can do to stop plastic from entering our watersheds.

Additionally, Algalita will offer 175 free copies of “Watershed Wonders: The Los Angeles River and the Cola Kayak” to interested public school teachers. Based on California State Science Standards, the book offers a rich cultural and ecological history of the LA River, contains lesson plans for classroom activities, and includes a DVD documenting Dr. Marcus Eriksen’s 52 mile voyage down the LA river on a canoe sized raft made from 100 plastic bottles and other recycled materials.
