Education - Plastics Are Forever
Plastics are Forever is a program that targets local high schools with a curriculum about plastic debris in the environment. Thanks to a grant from the California Coastal Commission in 2004-06 we were able to work with the Environmental Charter High School to investigate plastic debris that accumulates on beaches, trawl for plastic debris along the Pacific coast, and study plastic ingested by albatross.
During the Spring of 2006 the students of ECHS built a raft from 800 plastic bottles, which Dr. Marcus Eriksen sailed from Santa Barbara to San Diego to raise public awareness about plastic waste in our watersheds, wetlands, beaches and marine environment. In the future AMRF plans to expand Plastics are Forever to create a network of high school collaborating to document plastic debris in the environment.
