Plastic Density in the Pacific: 2005 Data

2005 Voyage Summary

During the 2005 voyage new sample sites were investigated using the Manta trawl. In addition to surface plastic sampling, plastics were collected and preserved to be analyzed for Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). The crew of the ORV Alguita attached NOAA tracking buoys to "ghost nets" (abandoned fishing nets that coalesce into a destructive mass). These buoys will aide scientists in understanding ocean currents as well as aide in ghost net clean-up efforts.

Count density refers to the number of plastic particles found per cubic meter of water. The larger the circle on the map, the greater number of plastic particles found at that particular site.
