The definition of restoration is "a return of something to former, original, normal, or unimpaired condition."
While it may be difficult, if not impossible, to ever be able to restore the world’s oceans to their original, normal or
unimpaired condition, Algalita has implemented successful
projects that are intended to make a positive impact.
A watershed is the area of land where all of the water that is under it or drains off of it goes into the same place. Watersheds come in all shapes and sizes, and currently there are 153 watersheds in California alone. Algalita has been active in encouraging the protection and restoration of watersheds and studying the impact of conditions surrounding them.
Algalita has completed a successful restoration project to return decimated southern California kelp forests to their original condition. The study conducted by Gordon Lehman found that combined laboratory sporing and transplanting is a good way to both introduce a new kelp bed and to have it reach critical mass in a short period of time.
