In order to bring about meaningful change, we need all hands on deck. We build connections and create opportunities for young people so they can work side by side with us to develop sustainable solutions.
International Youth Summit
A summit designed by young people, for young people and adults working together to take action against single-use plastic consumption. Participants dive into research, share community outreach ideas and work with mentors to further develop their plans. Each year, 15 Summit alumni are selected to become Peer Advisors and lead the following year’s event.
Next Summit: February 22-24, 2019 | Ocean Institute | Dana Point, CA
Youth Innovation Forum
When 50 young professionals and 50 plastics experts get together, big solutions emerge. This three-day conference-style event connects youth directly with industry leaders in worldwide plastics manufacturing, recycling and design to explore how technology, business models and waste management improvements can aid in eliminating plastic pollution.
Next Forum: August 2-4, 2019 | California State University Long Beach

Youth Ambassador Program
Every young person should be inspired to make a difference in their own way. By completing a series of tasks ranging from calling out sidewalk litter on social media to writing letters to government officials to composing original pieces of music, students can shape their own participation while earning rewards for accomplishing their goals. The program’s structure allows students to move up in rank, potentially becoming an Algalita Youth Advisor.
Program launch: January 2019
Workshops & Teaching Kits
Algalita delivers science-based education to thousands of elementary, middle and high school students across Southern California. We teach about the sources and impact of plastic pollution, and empower the next generation to reduce plastic waste in their schools and communities. We also host teacher training workshops and provide free, reusable Plastic Pollution Teaching Kits to educators. These activities feed directly into our youth leadership programs.
Workshops take place all academic year long | LA and Orange Counties
ExperienceShip Field Research Program
Algalita offers college experiences unlike any other. Each year, we recruit students to work directly with our staff in immersive field research projects that take our team all over the world. ExperienceShip participants have helped us conduct research on Lanternfish in the North and South Pacific, analyzed ocean water samples for plastic particles, worked locally in urban rivers, and more. Not only is this a great recruiting tool for Algalita, but it helps inspire the next generation of advocates for our mission.
Opportunities are ongoing | Gyre expedition available every 4-5 years
Help us build our community by donating or sharing our resources with a teacher, young person or family member. Together, we can arrive at a future free of plastic pollution.
