Fixit Clinics are community-powered events where volunteer Fixers support participants as they troubleshoot and repair everyday items, from small appliances and electronics to clothing, toys, bikes, and jewelry. Originally started in the Bay Area of California by Peter Mui, Fixit Clinics are now hosted around the world as hands-on learning experiences that help people build practical skills, save money, reduce waste, and connect with one another. Even when an item is not fully repaired, participants walk away with a deeper understanding of how things work and greater confidence to try again.
Schools are an ideal place for repair events. Hosting a Fixit Clinic on campus supports student learning, aligns with sustainability goals, diverts waste and invites the wider community into the school as a space for collaboration and problem-solving. This step-by-step guide is designed to help school staff and students plan and host a successful Fixit Clinic, turning repair into an engaging, educational experience for all involved!
Instructions
This guide is designed to be used as a step-by-step roadmap for planning and hosting a Fixit Clinic on a school campus. We recommend that a teacher, staff member, or school program coordinator serve as the primary organizer and use this resource to invite and support student participation throughout the process.
While Fixit Clinics offer rich learning opportunities, this resource is intentionally designed to go beyond the classroom! To support student learning, we have included a classroom lesson (Introduction to Repair Lesson) that can serve as a jumping off point for students to start thinking about repair, why repair matters, and the cultural significance of the practice. These lessons can be completed in the classroom ahead of time or incorporated into the day-of Fixit Clinic as part of the on-campus event experience.
Inside this guide, you will find clear, step-by-step instructions that walk you through each phase of hosting a Fixit Clinic, from early planning and logistics to day-of setup and facilitation.
