About the Algalita Board of Directors
Algalita is a dynamic and innovative nonprofit based in Long Beach, California, with a 30-year legacy of driving change and inspiring solutions. Our team thrives on collaboration, creativity, and a welcoming atmosphere that fosters meaningful impact. As a Board Member, you’ll work with a focused team passionate about tackling one of the planet’s most pressing environmental challenges: plastic pollution.
While the staff manage daily operations and programming, the Board of Directors plays a crucial role in providing strategic guidance, oversight, and evaluation of the organization, its program areas, and the Executive Director. Board Members commit to a two-year term, participate in six board meetings annually, and contribute to committee work. We take pride in being a collaborative group that motivates and inspires one another to make a lasting difference.
Algalita is globally recognized as the trailblazer in the fight against plastic pollution. Nearly 25 years ago, we were the first to uncover and bring attention to the swirling soup of plastic debris in the Pacific Ocean. Since then, we’ve been a catalyst for global change—connecting scientists, policymakers, corporations, young changemakers, and subject matter experts to drive innovative solutions.
We envision a world where plastic pollution is unthinkable. Our action plan: design and deliver educational experiences that empower individuals to understand the full scope of plastic pollution’s impact on people and the planet, while also providing tangible ways to support solutions.
We believe that every member of our team enriches our diversity by bringing unique perspectives, experiences, and approaches to understanding the world, addressing challenges, and designing impactful solutions. Together, we are shaping a future free from plastic pollution.

Fundraising Commitment
To ensure Algalita’s credibility when soliciting contributions from foundations, organizations, and individuals, it is vital that all Board Members demonstrate their commitment to the organization’s mission. Algalita expects 100% participation from its Board Members in making an annual contribution that aligns with their individual capacity.
Recognizing the diverse backgrounds of our Board Members and our desire to reflect the communities we serve, including students, educators, and others who may face financial constraints, the Board has established an intentionally low annual “give or get” contribution threshold of $100. This amount can be fulfilled through direct monetary donations or in-kind contributions of services, expertise, or other valuable resources.
This approach ensures inclusivity and allows passionate individuals from all walks of life to contribute meaningfully to Algalita’s mission while collectively strengthening the organization’s ability to secure external funding and amplify its impact.
