BYO Algalita 5yr Anniversary Party
Thank you to the huge crowd that joined Algalita and Bring Your Own Long Beach as we celebrated 5 years of partnership serving our local community. Everyone was treated to a lovely meal curated by Ethikli, the first package-free grocery shop in Long Beach. All guests also received a grab bag containing laundry liquid from @rootandsplendor, a lotion bar from @lbloveorganics, toothpaste tablets from @huppy, a bamboo toothbrush from @brushwithbamboo, and a snack bag from @stasherbag.

Taking Research to the Next Level
In 2020, our Executive Director, Katie Allen, and Captain Moore decided to establish a new sister organization that would investigate plastics pollution beyond the ocean environment. The dream was to develop a lab capable of analyzing nanoscale microplastics in tap water, air, soil, consumer products, and more. Shelly Moore immediately came on as ED and the dream became a reality. Today, Moore Institute for Plastic Pollution Research is working towards becoming the first-ever accredited lab to test for microplastics in drinking water AND they’re leading the effort to develop the first-ever open-source data system for tracking water quality. These are just two of many projects they have taken on since their inception.

If so, our friends at Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, Smithsonian MarineGEO program, and Cientificos de la Basura need your help protecting at-risk coastlines! Collect and evaluate data about colonizing organisms found on marine litter and submit your findings by 12/31.
